Driving Economic Regeneration Through Social Enterprise

Overview

Having won more than 230 public service contracts worth more than £46.2m in 2009, are social enterprises now better equipped to play a bigger role in strengthening local economies and communities during the economic downturn?

As both central and local government reduce their spending during the economic slowdown and focus on providing value for money, what are the opportunities for social entrepreneurs? And what are the barriers they face in setting up, managing and growing their businesses?

The Government believes that the innovation and enthusiasm of civil society is essential in tackling social, economical and political challenges that the UK faces today.

Social enterprise has an import role to play in the government’s Big Society vision. In The Coalition: Our Programme for Government, the government outlines its commitment and support to the creation and expansion of social enterprises. The coalition government will encourage and support social enterprise to have much greater involvement in the running of public services. The government will also use funds from dormant bank accounts to establish a ‘Big Society Bank,’ which will provide new finance for neighnourhood groups, charities and social enterprises.

This timely and informative forum will offer delegates the opportunity to discuss and examine the the role of social enterprise in tackling the social and economic challenges that the UK faces.
