The government is trying to increase number of apprentices to 3 million by 2020 as well as increase the quantity of post-16 apprenticeships. It is therefore imperative that the quality of these apprenticeship programmes is of the highest standard to ensure that young people are equipped with skills needed for successful career.

In order for apprenticeship programmes to succeed, training providers must deliver programmes that focus on developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours that the UK economy and businesses based in Britain are asking for, whilst also ensuring that they meet the requirements set out by the government in recent reforms to the apprenticeships.

This training course will help attendees establish a comprehensive, effective apprenticeship programme, tailored to the needs of your organisation, to ensure that your apprentices achieve high-quality outcomes and meet the skills requirements that the industry needs.

Breda Leyne

Senior Associate, The Strategic Development Network

Following a career background in the public sector Breda has been engaged in FE and Skills since 2001. She has worked with sector skills councils, employers and public sector bodies promoting workforce development through standards and qualifications. She supported the development and implementation of Apprenticeship Standards since 2013, working with employer developer groups and supporting the education and training sector transition to Standards delivery under the Future Apprenticeships Programme.

Breda has been a Strategic Development Network Senior Associate for more than ten years. Breda recently supported a professional organisation become registered with Institute for Apprenticeships to provide External Quality Assurance in their sector and has an interest in quality and end-point assessment.

Linda Martin

Managing Director, Professional Assessment

For the last 20 years, Linda has worked in the field of organisational development and training within the service sector and education and training. Linda has gained a reputation for someone that can quickly develop assessment, learning and development strategies. Linda is experienced in setting up assessment centres and has held Quality and Development Director Posts with a range of national training providers

Her current role as Managing Director of Professional Assessment Ltd, an EPAO providing assessment services for 17 standards, means she is well-placed to talk about how the end-point assessment process fits into the apprenticeship journey.

Linda has worked on a variety of organisational development initiatives that have included: clients such the Metropolitan Police, Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust, Royal College of Nursing, BBC, IHG, Aramark, Harrison’s and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, as well as several FE colleges, and other vocational training providers.

Jo Simovic

Director of Excellence – Skills and Apprenticeships, Umbrella Training

Jo has been “dreaming up” development programmes for elite businesses in the hospitality industry for over a decade.

Jo came to the UK from Serbia in 2004 to study Marketing & Management. All her career and life plans changed during her internship with a London based management consultancy in 2005. She realised that developing people, seeing them grow, seeing them gain confidence and the skills needed to further their careers was her calling.

She sees her work as a vocation, rather than just a job. She will talk passionately about people development and the importance of approaching it strategically.

Jo is obsessive about her own development and completed her MSc in Organisational Psychology at Birkbeck College researching ethical challenges in learning and development within the hospitality industry. She is an experienced IQA with a great track record with the Institute of Leadership & Management and other awarding organisations.

Umbrella Training is supporting Jo in her research endeavours and she will shortly commencing her PhD at Birkbeck College exploring the value of apprenticeship degrees in comparison to academic degrees.

Jo joined Umbrella Training in October 2017 as Head of Programmes and designed bespoke development solutions where she still works closely with all our clients to ensure that every solution makes an impact on business outcomes.

As Director of Excellence – all things Operations and Quality falls under her remit.

Sam Coulstock

Director of Business Relations, Umbrella Training

Hospitality runs through Sam’s blood and has worked in the industry since leaving school at the age of 16 after being inspired by his school work placement at a central London venue…

Sam’s early industry career involved working as an apprentice chef and then leading into management roles and after leaving the industry, Sam worked for Hospitality Plus and then joined The Springboard Charity in June 2003, where he worked for 13 years as Customer Relations Director before joining Umbrella Training in June 2016.

Sam won an Acorn Award in 2008, was vice chair of HR in hospitality until 2016, was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality in February 2017, became a Enterprise Adviser for the Careers and Enterprise Company. Sam sits on many industry and young people steering groups such as The Springboard Charity London Advisory Board.

As Business Relations Director at Umbrella Training, Sam is working with many elite and luxury brands within hospitality helping them to use the apprenticeship levy and standards to meet growing business needed and demands. Sam has built a strong portfolio of business partners, strategic partnerships and worked on a number of high profile events for Umbrella Training to showcase hospitality apprenticeships, this lead to Ofsted inspectors quoting they have “established outstanding partnerships with employers to provide high-quality-standard apprenticeships in the hospitality industry”.

  • Questions that employers and training providers should ask of EPAOs and recognising independence is about separation, not opposition and addressing the challenges of end-point assessment
  • The role of the EPAO and the value independent assessment can provide to employers, training providers and apprentices
