Overview
The coalition government has announced details of £6.2 billion of savings from Government spending in 2010-11 to tackle the unprecedented £156 billion deficit, while still protecting the quality of key frontline services. The savings will be driven by the new Efficiency and Reform Group, whose board will be chaired jointly by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, and the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, Francis Maude. It will have the power to make sure department’s works together to tackle waste and improve accountability across a range of areas, including ICT spend.
The link between reduction in emissions and reduction in operational costs is one that has particular resonance during these strained economic times. It is therefore vital that the public sector has a better understanding of what green ICT means and how it can enable efficiency and budgetary savings during this period of economic prudence.
The government is engaged with varying green ICT strategies that include the Public Sector Network (PSN) and interoperable services which are due to go live by October 2010. Public sector organisations are starting to use voice and data networks, offering expected savings of £500m.
Data Centre Rationalisation and the G-Cloud Programme are heavy towards achieving greener ICT. The government is aiming to consolidate hundreds of computer data centres, saving £300m, and leading to a 75% reduction in power and cooling requirements. The government cloud (G-Cloud) infrastructure will also enable public sector bodies to select and host ICT services from one secure shared network. Multiple services will be available from multiple suppliers on the network making it quicker and cheaper to switch suppliers and ensure systems are best suited to need.
Agenda
Government ICT Goes Green Conference 2010 is the UK’s leading conference for those involved in reducing the environmental impact of ICT systems across the public sector and with its insightful workshop sessions and unrivalled networking opportunities, this is a conference not to be missed.
