Road Safety

Tuesday 8th December 2009, QEII Conference Centre, London, 08:30 - 16:15
Inside Government's National Road Safety Conference
A Safer Way - Road Safety Beyond 2010
CONFIRMED: Paul Clark MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for Transport
"Our target for 2020…is to reduce deaths by a third. We are also proposing to reduce serious injuries by 33% over the same timeframe.”
Jim Fizpatrick MP, former Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Transport, 22nd April 2009
Overview
In 2010 the Government will unveil its new, ten-year road safety strategy.
The number of deaths on our roads has reached an all-time low. A total of 2,538 people were killed on roads in Britain last year- the lowest annual figures since records began in 1926. This represents a 14% drop on last year. Britain now has the equal safest roads of any major nation, and the figures also mean that the Government has reached its 2010 target of cutting road deaths and seriously injured on the roads- seven per cent fewer than in 2007.
However, there remain three groups for which the reduction in road-related collisions has been markedly slower than for other groups, namely, young drivers, motorcyclists, and those who drive for work. Child deaths on the roads rose from an all-time low of 121 in 2007 to 124 last year, and total cyclist casualties rose slightly, reminding us all much work still needs to be done.
With an estimated cost of £3bn to the economy for road-related deaths and serious injuries, and with more vehicles than ever (33 million vehicles in 2006) registered to use our roads, the launch of the government’s road safety strategy for 2010-2030 will target further, significant improvements in road safety.
Delegates at this national conference will be provided with an opportunity to learn of key developments in creating a road network and transport system that not only provides safer roads in Britain, but also encourages more responsible and sustainable travel choices.
