This Forum will provide a timely opportunity for those involved in geography teaching and development to come together to discuss the latest challenges facing the sector and the opportunities available to support the learning and development of young people interested in geography. Attendees will hear about the rising importance of using data and GIS in collaboration with more traditional geographical skills, as well as discussing how best to develop and teach the recently introduced curriculum requirements. Best practice case studies will give participants the opportunity to learn about using innovative technology in the class, the role of assessment and feedback and using local partnerships to support classroom learning.

Geography is becoming an increasingly popular subject for students from across the UK, with total numbers of GCSE candidates rising by 4.3% in 2018 to hit a 20 year high of total candidates. The picture is less positive at A Level, with a decrease of 11.3% in 2018, although it is still one of the top-ten most popular A level choices in the UK.
The Geography curricula for both GCSEs and A Levels were reformed in 2016, with the first students undertaking reformed examinations in 2018. In an attempt to improve student attainment whilst encouraging greater student numbers, reforms included a new emphasis on fieldwork, key data skills and extended writing assignments. In turn, this has ensured that Key Stages 3 and 4 have been updated to provide a greater synthesis of skills and a clearer developmental pathway for student geographers. The latest Ofsted inspection framework, due to come into effect in September 2019, will encourage schools to provide a comprehensive curriculum that creates rounded pupil as part of their new ‘quality of education’ grade, a development that geography departments will have to consider when designing geography teaching.
Yet, the Royal Geographical Society has outlined existing structural weaknesses in geography teaching, including a ‘marginalisation’ of geography within primary schools, low-levels of specialist teachers at GCSE and a lack of quality engagement at KS3 level. With issues such as climate change and migration set to gain increasing importance in everyday lives, the Society has called for a significant investment in geography as a vital subject for students.
To support a subject that increasingly is managing to branch the divide between STEM and humanities, geography departments will have to continue to deliver exceptional teaching in a thoughtful and engaging manner that incorporates all elements of geographical learning from key stage 3 through to A levels. Geography teachers will need to continue to incorporate data and GIS technology teaching within the classroom whilst creating inspiring fieldwork opportunities outside the classroom to best support the development of student’s key skills and maximise their ability to achieve.
Rob Chambers, Head of Geography, St Ivo Academy
In 2019 Rob was awarded the RGS Ordnance Survey Award for excellence in geography education at secondary level. He has 20 years teaching experience and is currently Head of Geography at St Ivo Academy, a large comprehensive in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. He graduated from Birmingham University with a BSc in Geography, followed by a PGCE at the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the GA and the RGS and is also a Chartered Geographer and his department has both the GA’s SGQM and Centre of Excellence status. Rob has worked with the Princes Teaching Institute as a Teacher Leader and Schools Programme Consultant and he has also lectured as part of the RGS Scholars Day. Rob has a strong interest in the use ICT and online learning in supporting effective teaching and learning and spent 8 years as an Advanced Skills Teacher/ Lead Practitioner in Geography and ICT across the curriculum.
Karen Haward, Senior Geography Consultant, The Harris Federation
Karen Haward is a Senior Geography Consultant for the Harris Federation, a multi-academy trust with 48 primary and secondary schools across London. She works as part of a team who are collectively responsible for the provision of Geography across all schools from KS1 to KS5. She leads on the Key Stage Five Geography programme, working on curriculum design, assessment and teacher CPD, as well as applying curriculum thinking and theory to developing the A-Level curricula. Following nineteen years teaching and leading Geography, Karen took a sabbatical to study a Masters in International Development before joining Harris three years ago. Karen has recently taken on the role of CPD and Research Lead across the Consultancy.
Shelley Monk, Geography Subject Advisor , OCR
Shelley has been a Geography Subject Advisor with OCR for 5.5 years. Prior to that Shelley taught geography for 16 years and was both a Head of Department and Head of Year, in the UK and Internationally. Her particular passion is fieldwork in geography, having led a wide range of national and international fieldwork visits. Shelley achieved her Master’s in Educational Leadership and Management in 2016 and her dissertation research focused on effective CPD and its impact on teachers’ practice. Shelley is more widely involved in education through her Chair of Governor’s role at a large academy in Cambridgeshire, which she has held for just over two years.
Nicholas Lapthorn, Head of Centre, Field Studies Council and Past President, Geographical Association
Nick Lapthorn has worked for the Field Studies Council for over 20 years at both residential and non-residential centres. He is currently Head of Centre at FSC Nettlecombe Court in Somerset. He has been an active member of the Geographical Association since the late 1990s, during this time he has been a member, Secretary and Chair of the Fieldwork Special Interest Group and was GA President in 2017-18. Nick has contributed to a number of articles for the GA, has been a regular presenter at conferences and more widely promoting fieldwork in the UK and overseas.
Rachel Adams FRGS CGeog, Former Head of Geography, Wimbledon High School
Rachel Adams is a highly experienced Geography teacher who was Head of Department for many years at Wimbledon High School. She set up the Wimbledon Geographical Association, which provides after-school lectures for sixth formers, plus conferences for teachers and students. Rachel specialises in how GIS can be used to both enhance the Geography curriculum in schools and be an effective tool for AL students producing their NEA. She uses Story Map as a vehicle for teaching students, which reduces the pressure on staff expertise. An active member of the Post-16/Higher Education Committee of the GA, she has delivered workshops on GIS at the GA Conference.
Stacey Hill, Head of Curriculum for Geography, AQA
Stacey has been a part of the Geography Curriculum Team at AQA for 3 years. This role involves providing support to teachers in delivering the AQA specifications at local, regional and national events as well as offering subject expertise across AQA to influence strategic business decisions. Prior to this, Stacey led the Geography department at a pioneering leadership academy and secondary school in the North West for several years, leading on the development of key stage 4 and 5 Curriculum during the transition between previous and current specifications following reform. She graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc (Hons) Geography having spent a year at the University of Waterloo in Canada researching and mapping the Geomorphology of the Great Lakes.
Justin Loveland, Head of Geography, Woodroffe School
Justin Loveland has been teaching geography for over 15 years and is currently head of department at the Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis. Following his graduation in Environmental Sciences from Salford University he has worked in the outdoor sector across the country including time with the Field Studies Council at Nettlecombe Court in Somerset. Since his arrival at Woodroffe the Geography department has consistently raised attainment at KS4 Geography and gained the GA SGQM accreditation in 2017. The department has built up a strong environmental ethos and has regularly been involved with local projects along the Jurassic Coast. Justin has a strong interest in developing fieldwork experiences both locally and across the country and has supported other schools to this end through the Jurassic Schools Teaching Alliance.
Steve Brace FRGS, Head of Education and Outdoor Learning, The Royal Geographical Society
Steve Brace is Head of Education and Outdoor Learning at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). He leads the Society’s award winning educational programme. This spans the development of online resources, CPD programme, fieldwork support, Geography Scholarships and activities to promote the importance and relevance of geography to young people. He has worked closely with DfE, Ofsted and Ofqual in relation to the geography National Curriculum and its GCSE and A Level examinations. Previously Director of Education for the Commonwealth Institute and Head of Education at the development charity ActionAid, Steve started his career as a geography teacher in Hillingdon. Simran Jouhal, Head of Geography, Lead Teacher Practitioner of Staff Development, The Archer Academy
Simran is an experienced Head of Geography in a North London school. She has been a GCSE exam marker for the last 2 years, marking a variety of papers within the Geography specification. At her current school, she is responsible for training the new teachers, staff wellbeing, and sits on the governing body, whilst completing her SLT secondment role in charge of the KS3 assessment and curriculum and her NPQSL. She is an avid and passionate geographer, with an online following, always keen to inspire and be inspired by the wonderful world of geography and geography teaching.

Case Study: Designing Effective Curriculum Progression To Acheive at Key Stage 4
- This case study will discuss the Woodroffe approach to creating supportive curriculum transition for pupils transferring from key stage 3 to key stage 4
- Woodroffe has increased both attainment and results for pupils at key stage 4 and achieved recognition for continual departmental improvement year on year
- Woodroffe will share insight into their approach to ensuring pupils at key stage 4 strengthen and improve key skills in fieldwork, data and analysis, such as creating alternative learning opportunities as creating films and promoting extra-curricular activities such as attending geographical festivals
