This Forum will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss with sector leaders how to design and deliver innovative and profitable fundraising campaigns across the voluntary sector. In addition to this, best practice case studies will share guidance on developing effective digital campaigns, increasing donor funding and investing in lottery fundraising which diversifies income streams and raises fundraising revenue for campaigns.

The number of new regular donors to charities fell by almost one third in 2018 according to Rapidata’s ‘Charity Direct Debit Tracking Report 2019’. Furthermore, according to NCVO’s ‘UK Civil Society Almanac 2019’ report, income from the government to charity sectors has fallen continuously over the last seven years, having decreased from 37% of total income in 2009/10 to 31% in 2016/17.

Following a consultation in autumn of 2018, the Fundraising Regulator announced the release of a new and improved Code of Fundraising Practice which comes into effect in October 2019. The changes include rearranging the standards into three sections so that users can recognise which standards apply, depending on the type of fundraising they carry out. This will include standards for all fundraising, standards which apply to working with others and specific fundraising methods. The ‘Code of Fundraising Practice 2019’ provides strict guidance on the responsibilities of charities and those who govern them in relation to fundraising, the role of professional fundraisers, commercial participators and partners and the rules around collecting money or other property.

Moreover, the Institute of Fundraising released the 2019 ‘Fundraising for Impact’ report which outlines key challenges, considerations and opportunities for charities currently and in the future. The report includes key suggestions for charity fundraising including how to future-proof your organisation and particularly, how to future-proof fundraising strategies. It also suggests a renewed focus on measuring and reviewing relevant information to ensure supporter experiences are improving and investing in staff in order to create a thriving workplace.

With a legal obligation for charities to follow the ‘Code of Fundraising Practice 2019’ and provided that charity funding from the government and other public bodies are becoming increasingly difficult to secure, it is therefore vital that charities work to diversify their income through innovation and technological advancements as well as working in partnership with the private sector and the wider community to design and deliver outstanding fundraising campaigns. Failure to do so could see the voluntary sector miss out on a pipeline of future funding and therefore have a detrimental effect on the implementation of successful fundraising campaigns in the future.

Morning Keynote: Analysing the Changes to the 2019 Code of Fundraising Practice

  • Outlining the changes to the Code of Fundraising Practice which come into effect in October 2019, including changes to the laws around online giving platforms and phone-paid services and demonstrating how the voluntary sector must comply
  • Clarifying where in the code there will be differences in law in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland and what these means for different regions of the UK
  • Providing fundraisers clearer navigation by rearranging the standards into three aspects in order for users to clearly recognise which standards apply depending on the type of fundraising they are involved with

  • Exploring key outcomes from the ‘Local Charity & Community Group Sustainability Report 2018’ including findings that 71% of respondents are concerned that their organisation is less skilled in effectively running a fundraising campaign
