About

Almost a third of older people experience a fall every year, with 5% of these falls leading to a fracture and hospitalisation, at an estimated cost of £435 million to the NHS.

As outlined in the 2023 Urgent and Emergency Care plan, NHS England is looking to standardise and scale up falls and frailty services to increase access to joined up approaches across inpatient and community care. With falls becoming increasingly common, contributing to discharge delay through longer-term hospital stays, it is now more crucial than ever that the health and social care, voluntary and local government sectors have effective fall prevention services in place.

Join this one-day interactive event on Preventing Falls in Older People to learn how to plan, structure and deliver effective fall prevention strategies. Featuring practical examples from different settings and group collaboration sessions, this course analyses the key areas of effective falls prevention plans, including evaluating the causes of falls, multifactorial assessments, and personalised interventions. In a highly interactive day, you will work together with peers to identify effective strategies for managing and preventing falls and clarify their potential for a tailored fall prevention strategy to implement in your organisation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and implement the updated NICE and related national guidance

  • Engage with the process of multifactorial assessment and intervention

  • Learn how to prevent falls among older people with delirium and dementia

  • Discuss how to effectively report and respond to falls

  • Create a successful fall prevention strategy for primary and secondary care

It is not enough to save lives; we must also seek to restore them.

Overview

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in people under 40 in the UK. It can cause a range of serious and lifelong health issues for people who survive, including dementia, epilepsy and poor mental health. Without adequate or appropriate rehabilitation and recovery support, a patients recovery is detrimentally impacted, worsening long-term disability, and magnifying the costs to both the individual and society.

TBI is often referred to as a ‘hidden handicap’ because disability after TBI results largely from cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems, rather than physical impairments. Therefore, it is essential that those working to support and rehabilitate individuals with TBIs understand how to manage the complex behavioral changes associated with TBIs, foster empathy and encourage independence, participation and integration back into society.

This Supporting Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) online CPD event provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the range and complexities of TBIs, and the cruciality of adequate rehabilitative care. Gain strategies for effectively and empathetically managing the behavioural risks associated with TBIs and develop a holistic, person-centred approach to the care you provide.

The CPD event gives you practical skills and tools to effectively communicate and engage with the individuals you support, improving their long-term recovery and integration back into society. Engage in stimulating discussions with rehabilitation professionals, support workers, nurses, mental health workers and others, fostering a culture of collaboration that transcends agency boundaries.

By the end of the workshop, you will have the skills, insights and knowledge to provide impactful and effective support and ensure the optimal recovery of individuals you work with. Tackle challenges associated with TBIs head-on and develop an action plan tailored to the unique needs and preferences of those you work with, to drive meaningful change.

Learning Outcomes

  • Clearly understand the spectrum of TBIs and the complex range of cognitive, emotional, behavioural and physical consequences

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate across agencies to drive impactful and coordinated recovery plans

  • Learn practical ways to support individuals in re-engaging into society and daily activities

  • Recognise the relationship between TBIs and mental health, and how to manage psychological problems which may arise

  • Develop strategies to foster a person-centred approach to rehabilitation and care, tailored to the individuals you work with

Overview

The key to meeting the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and recent Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, is to have strong leadership from management and accessibility champions. The topic is highly complex and has a significant strategic element. Organisations that do not build strong leadership for accessibility are bound to have it become an unfocused activity by a small number of staff, and ultimately become a significant legal and reputational risk for the organisation.

This event is focused on understanding the regulations, policy, and how to cover all of the important management tasks to defend against legal challenges, along with embedding accessibility as a responsibility for all staff.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, delegates should have the knowledge and tools to:

  • Know the effects and timescales of the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018

  • Apply the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2

  • Know their organisations responsibilities under the regulations

  • Know how to write and what is included into a compliant accessibility statement

  • Know steps they can take to include accessibility into procurement processes

  • Understand responsibilities when it comes to 3rd party content

  • Know how to engage senior management on accessibility

  • Understand what changes need to be made across an organisation to deliver accessibility

Resources Provided

To support delegate learning, we will be providing training materials and resources for them to take away to help implementation of their learning after the course. We will provide:

Overview

As the Housing Ombudsman and Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman joint ‘Complaint Handling Code’ comes into force, it is essential that you adhere to the new requirements

In addition to this, the Ombudsman is finding severe maladministration in a record number of cases, and the Regulator has introduced new standards and an inspection regime to check that landlords’ day-to-day services are serving tenants well.

Social housing conditions and the performance of landlords is also a focus of central government. This stems from the tragic Grenfell fire – which led to concerns over tenants not being heard or knowing how to complain – and from the poor handling of damp and mould in social housing properties.

In this context, effective complaint handling is vital – not just to meet the expectations of the Ombudsman and Regulator, but primarily to resolve problems for residents. Also, learning from those complaints is essential for service improvement.

Join this Effectively Handling Complaints in Housing online event to learn about the current expectations for complaint handling and the tools and techniques you require to meet them.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to hear and learn from colleagues who are facing the same challenges.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn from experts, formerly with the Housing Ombudsman Service, about the latest requirements for good complaint handling in line with the  Complaint Handling Code

  • Hear how to avoid common mistakes and resolve complaints through effective investigations and robust written complaint responses

  • Learn what to consider when proposing an appropriate and proportionate remedy to resolve a complaint

  • Hear how best to use customer feedback to learn from complaints and improve services for residents

  • Increase your awareness of the importance of keeping up to date and accurate records and avoid common pitfalls in record keeping

  • Hear about the latest and coming developments in complaint-handling, and discuss these with the trainers and other delegates

Anti-social behaviour is a broad term, encompassing a myriad of different disruptive behaviours which have a negative impact on individuals and communities. Tackling anti-social behaviour is a particularly difficult issue to mitigate and resolve and is increasingly becoming a priority for housing associations and social housing providers. Adding to this are newly announced measures as part of the Government’s wider Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan (March 2023) to support social housing landlords to crackdown on unruly tenants.

This Effective ASB Case Management in Housing course will focus on how landlords in the social housing sector can effectively handle complaints of anti-social behaviours, and help you develop essential skills such as robust investigation methods and case management principles, in order to manage both risk and expectations.

This event is packed full of energy, interesting content, unique perspectives, humour and long-lasting impact. This course will cover the fundamental principles of ASB case management, from opening cases, early intervention, investigations and closing cases effectively. Using a variety of techniques including videos, interactive activity, debates and information sessions, you will leave this training feeling re-energised and ready to take on your next ASB case with a fresh perspective.

Overview

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the UK is now included within the Strategic Policing Requirement (SPR), identifying VAWG offences as a national threat, in line with offences such as terrorism and serious organised crime. The national urgency around tackling and reducing the prevalence of VAWG is felt now more than ever, as statistics estimate that 1.4 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2023 and 798,000 women falling victim to sexual assault offences in the year ending March 2022.

In addition to this, the government’s acceptance of the Angliolni Inquiry’s recommendations reinforces the urgent need for organisations to have a more robust VAWG strategy in place.

Featuring solutions focused workshops and opportunities for interactive discussion throughout, this one-day practical training course offers attendees, working with victims and perpetrators, a vital opportunity to critically reflect on their VAWG prevention practices.

Attendees will analyse new domestic abuse offences, evaluate rape and sexual offences investigative practices, learn how to effectively respond to diverse victims needs and discover innovative approaches to pursuing preparators, leaving the day with actionable insights to takeaway and implement into their tackling VAWG strategy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the Operation Soteria projects key findings, discerning what this means for your role in improving investigations of rape and sexual offences going forward

  • Receive guidance on the nuances of coercive and controlling behaviour, ensuring your organisation is proficient in identifying warning signs in victims and perpetrators alike

  • Learn how to identify perpetrators and take a proactive approach in tackling VAWG

Overview

The social housing sector is currently in a period of rapid change, and it is crucial that social housing organisations transform and improve how they engage with residents. Tenant satisfaction has continued to fall over the past five years, reaching 72.3% after six months of 2023/24, indicating that social housing landlords are failing to listen to and meet tenants’ expectations. The recent tragedies and reports underscore the critical necessity for social housing providers to heed the voices of their community members. Through listening to the voices of, and better understanding tenants, you will be able to deliver higher quality services, reduce complaint levels and ensure tenants are kept safe and happy.

From April 2024, the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023 emerges as a beacon of reform, heralding an era of heightened accountability and enhanced tenant welfare. This groundbreaking legislation introduces a comprehensive overhaul of consumer standards within social housing, placing them on equal footing with economic standards. Landlords must demonstrate a more balanced, tenant-focused approach in the social housing sector.

This Enchancing Tenant Engagement online event provides vital insights and updates on the dynamic landscape of tenant engagement within the social housing sector. Discover innovative strategies for optimising Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSMs) and leveraging data analytics to elevate tenant engagement. Engage with industry peers to analyse and address the primary obstacles hindering improved engagement. Gain actionable knowledge to drive improvements in tenant interaction and satisfaction within your social housing initiatives

Overview

The Local Government Association recently found that nearly 1 in 5 councils are likely to have to issue a Section 114 notice, meaning councils across the UK now have to generate alternative sources of income, in response to increased cost pressures and tightened budgets. Local authorities must innovate and commercialise their income generation strategies, in order to meet the growing demand pressures on council services. Commercialism is accompanied by intense scrutiny and economic and reputational risks, making it essential for councils to understand the regulatory landscape for income generation, embody a commercial culture and ensure appropriate governance and risk mitigation when executing income generation initiatives.

This Optimising Income Generation for Local Authorities online event will equip you with an understanding of the cost and demand pressures currently facing local authorities and the legislative framework for income generation. You will learn how to develop a more commercialised culture within your organisation, through training, innovation and leadership, and explore how to ensure commercial ventures sustain social value important to the communities you serve. By the end of the course you will also learn best practice from councils whom have successfully generated income, and understand the risks and rewards of commercialism.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define and explore the various sources of income for local authorities

  • Develop an awareness of potential challenges and risks associated with new revenue streams

  • Explore methods to foster innovative commercial thinking at all levels within local authorities

  • Identify strategies to maintain social value while simultaneously generating income

About

Building upon newly introduced requirements for social housing landlords to collect data against the Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSMs) from April 2023, the Social Housing Regulation Act (July 2023) represents a new age of consumer regulation, tenant engagement and improving standards.

Effective use of data allows your organisation to measure the effectiveness of a given strategy. When strategies are put in place to overcome a challenge, data collection will allow you to determine how well a solution is performing and whether your approach is delivering the desired outcomes.

Data can help drive your tenant engagement strategy and engagement activities as well as ensure compliance with the new proactive regulation. Data analysis can also help uncover gaps in landlord provision and enable proactive interventions.

With the introduction of the TSMs and the new consumer standards currently under consultation – now is the perfect time to learn about data and how to use it to improve tenant experience.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of data and the wider legislative landscape across the social housing sector including the introduction of the TSMs

  • Ascertain the different types of data your organisation holds from Equality & Diversity data, property management data, survey and satisfaction data and why it matters

  • Learn why it is important to trust your data and the serious consequences if you don’t

  • Understand what the TSMs are and how to prepare

  • Learn from best practise to improve the data whilst navigating GDPR

    • Utilise data to improve tenant services, satisfaction and increase data efficiency and how to avoid death by survey.

About

There has been a steep rise in the number of housing complaints made to social landlords, and to the Housing Ombudsman, in recent years. The Ombudsman is finding severe maladministration in a record number of cases, and complaint handling is under closer scrutiny than ever before – not just from the Ombudsman, but also from the Regulator of Social Housing.

Social housing conditions and the performance of landlords is also in the spotlight and under scrutiny from central government.

Learning from complaints is essential for service improvement.

This training day will give social landlords the knowledge and tools to effectively respond to and manage complaints. You will hear about the latest expectations of the Housing Ombudsman and the Regulator. Delegates will also have a unique opportunity to join deep dive workshops covering specific issues, and network with colleagues who are facing the same challenges.

Workshops will look at:

  • The Housing Ombudsman’s expectations for complaint handling

  • Final stage reviews and decisions

  • Learning from complaints

  • Managing unreasonable behaviour

The event will be chaired by complaint-handling experts and former Ombudsman specialists Dave Simmons and John Goodwin.

Who should attend?

The training day is aimed at anyone who deals with or has oversight of social housing complaints — from frontline staff to senior managers and governing bodies.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn from experts about the standards for good complaint handling and how to meet them, in line with the Complaints Handling Code

  • Hear about the latest expectations and approaches of the Housing Ombudsman and the Regulator of Social Housing.

  • Increase your awareness of common pitfalls and challenges in complaint handling, including poor communication and record keeping, and how to manage unreasonable behaviour.

  • Find out how to learn from complaints and develop a learning framework within your organisation.

About

Almost a third of older people experience a fall every year, with 5% of these falls leading to a fracture and hospitalisation, at an estimated cost of £435 million to the NHS.

As outlined in the Urgent and Emergency Care plan, published in January 2023, NHS England is looking the standardise and scale up falls and frailty teams to increase access to joined up approaches across inpatient and community care. With falls becoming increasingly common, contributing to discharge delay through longer-term hospital stays it is now more crucial than ever that the health and social care, voluntary and local government sectors have effective fall prevention methods and care plans in place.

Join this one-day interactive training course on Preventing Falls in Older People to learn how to create and embed effective fall prevention strategies. Featuring group collaboration sessions and practical workshops, this course analyses the key areas of effective falls prevention plans, including evaluating the causes of falls, multifactorial assessments, and personalised interventions. In a highly interactive day, you will work together with peers to produce effective strategies for managing falls and create a tailored fall prevention strategy to implement in your organisation.
